The picturesque town of Airvault grew throughout the middle-ages; many of its original buildings are still visible in the town today, these form an important framework to an ethnographic museum. The former Abbey of the Augustinians founded at the end of the 10th century with its Abbey Church and Conventual buildings. The old Castle (private), overlooking the town. Airvaults half-timbered houses, underground fountain, and covered market building.

Airvault is also the chief town of a remarkable canton... At Saint-Jouin de Marnes, you will discover a superb Abbey of a “roman poitevin” style; at Marnes, you will appreciate the charm along the borders of the River Dive; you will be surprised by the pre-Roman church at Saint-Généroux, and you will wander with pleasure on the footpaths of Boussais and Irais"…

The Airvaudais villages

Saint Jouin de Marnes     A small village of 578 inhabitants enjoys a beautiful view over the valley of the river Dive and the dungeon of Moncontour.
What makes Saint Jouin de Marnes  so very interesting is its church. It is one of the jewels of the art “roman Poitevin”.
Airvault  
Small town character in the heart of Deux-Sevres, the town of Airvault developed during the period of the Middle Ages.
Availles           Availles A commune of 223 inhabitants, Availles-Thouars is a pleasant little town situated on the banks of the river Thouet. There are several interesting monuments to be found in this village.
Boussais

Boussais has 399 inhabitants and an area of 1972 hectares. A small, simple villa was built in the early eleventh century but the town grew and there was even a castle in the town. (This was destroyed by its owner in 1946 because he could not pay his taxes)
Irais
This small village was named Ydriacus in 971. Irais first visible signs of human settlement was the building of the church dedicated to St. Paul, in the twelfth century when a small monastery existed.
Marnes
    Situated in the valley of the river Dive, it gives the village the special charm of Marnes which has an interesting heritage. There are currently 259 inhabitants in an area of 1700 hectares.
Saint Généroux     This small village of 308 inhabitants standing in 2046 hectares has several advantages that makes Saint Généroux a must to visit.

Du 1er mai au 30 juin :

« Exposition "Le musée d'Airvault dresse sa table" »

- L'exposition présente les traditions culinaires du siècle passé. Ouvert le mercredi, vendredi, samedi et dimanche de 14 h 30 à 18 h 30. Entrée libre. Organisé par l'association Les Amis du Musée, contact au 05 49 70 84 07.

Le mercredi 27 juin :

Randonnée « Les lavoirs de Louin »hypoge

- Découvrez les lavoirs de Louin, l'église et l'hypogée Gallo-romaine par le biais de la randonnée. Rendez-vous à l'église de Louin à 9 h en cas de grande chaleur et sinon à 15 h. Sortie gratuite organisée avec les associations Airvault Accueille et Tourisme Animation en Airvaudais (ex Office de Tourisme) dans le cadre des mercredis de l'été. Informations et réservations avant le 26 juin au 05 49 70 84 03.

 

Le mercredi 20 juin :

« Visite guidée du centre ville médiéval »

- Rendez-vous à Tourisme Animation en Airvaudais, ex Office de Tourisme, à 15 h au 48 rue des Halles à Airvault pour découvrir la Place Saint-Pierre, l'église abbatiale d'Airvault et ses vestiges, la fontaine souterraine, les Halles et la cour intérieure du Vieux Château. Visite à 4 euros pour les adultes et gratuit pour les moins de 14 ans. Suivie d'une dégustation de produits polonais. Informations et réservations à Tourisme Animation en Airvaudais au 05 49 70 84 03.

 

Le dimanche 24 juin :

« Rallye pédestre à Marnes »marnes

- A la découverte de Marnes et de ses alentours, rendez-vous au parking de la mairie à partir de 8 h 30. Participation à 10 euros par équipe. Repas champêtre autour d'un four à pain à 10 euros. Renseignements et inscriptions au 05 49 67 41 05.  Organisé par Florilèges.

 

Le samedi 10 juin :

« Vide-greniers à Louin »

- Vide-greniers et animations toute la journée au stade à Louin, avec buvette et restauration sur place. Emplacement gratuit. Organisé par Louin Animations.

T2A has a bike-renting service. Helmets, locks and tour maps are available for bargain prices:  3€ for half a day ! There are organized bike rides during the summer season: Do not hesitate to contact the T2A-team to know more about it !

During opening hours an internet point is available to the tourists at T2A. This free service allows visitors to book a train , boat or plain ticket, check their mailboxes etc.

Various items are on sale at T2A: hiking sheets, guidebooks, historical or cultural books, postcards, CDs, objects with the image of the city

During the highlights of the city, such as festivals, T2A provides its service to local associations. For example, each year, you can book your tickets for the festival "World Music and Dance" and "the dream of the Aboriginal" at T2A-office.

T2A offers the service of its local guides who will show you the beauty of their region  by following a tour in the medieval town center of Airvault. The city will have no secrets for you any more! Program: St. Peter's Square with its halls and half-timbered houses, the underground fountain, the abbey church, the museum of popular arts and traditions, the old castle, al connectedl through a maze of picturesque alleys ...

T2A can also offer you guided tours of the surrounding municipalities and their jewels: visit St. Généroux with its Old Bridge and its pre-Romanesque church, the magnificent abbey church of Saint-Jouin-de-Marne, Marne with his church and the tranquil shores of the Dive, Availles-Thouarsais and Castle Piogé ....

Tourisme en Gatine

The is the new name of the  tourist office of the "Pays de Gâtine" .

The 10 of municipalities making up the country Gâtine have joined together their respective Tourist Offices and Syndicat d' Initiative, the main tasks are:

- Welcome the tourists

- Information

- Communication

- Promotion-Marketing

- Marketing of tourism products

- Animation

At the1st of January 2011,  all the villages decided unanimously to delegate all the tasks mentioned above to Tourisme en Gâtine, except that the animation remains also the responsibility of the old structures, making local committees of animation. This made it necesairy to change the name of the Tourist Office to Tourisme, Animation en Airvaudais (T2A).

This association continues to provide, with the same team, its main activities to serve tourists and locals and the 2011 entertainment program will be build on the events of the various associations.

T2A will continue to sell tickets for:

- Festival Dance and World Music

- The Dream of the Aboriginal

And continue to organize

- the Farmers Market Thursday, August 4, 2011 from 6:00 p.m.

- the sightseeings

- exhibitions

- bike rental

- itineraries and Touring biking etc ....
